Michael Doyle, 88, pastor, peace activist, and advocate for city and its people, dies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Msgr. Michael J. Doyle, 88, an Irish-born Catholic priest who became one of Camden\u2019s most eloquent and effective champions, died Friday at his home across from <a href=\"https:\/\/sacredheartofcamden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sacred Heart Church<\/a>, the city parish he pastored for close to half a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diagnosed with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/blogs\/inq-blinq\/Pastor-cancer-patient-arts-patron--.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> cancer of the jaw<\/a> in 2016, Father <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/msgr-michael-doyle-sacred-heart-church-camden-nj-retires-46-years-20200705.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Doyle retired in 2020<\/a>, and after contracting COVID-19 about two months ago, he had been recovering in a nursing care facility in Cherry Hill. But he wanted to return to his modest rowhouse where he enjoyed seeing children come and go to Sacred Heart School and did so two weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe longed to come home,\u201d Teresa Reader, the longtime business and office manager at Sacred Heart, said Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe touched people\u2019s hearts in a way people aren\u2019t used to,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a privilege to work for such a gracious, kind, and loving man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Camden Mayor Dana Redd, now CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/camdencommunitypartnership.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Camden Community Partnership<\/a>, had known Father Doyle since she was a student at Sacred Heart. Following the deaths of her parents in 1976, \u201cFather Doyle and the Sacred Heart community embraced my brother and I, and our family, with an outpouring of love and support that has lasted many years,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFather Doyle was an angel who loved Camden with all of his heart, with all of his soul,\u201d Redd said. \u201cWe were blessed to have him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camden County Commissioner Jeff Nash described Father Doyle as \u201ca true humanitarian who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Camden City residents\u201d for more than 50 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis impact on Camden City has been remarkable,\u201d Nash said in a statement. \u201cWithout him, this community would not be where it is today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Said the Rev. Vincent Guest, Sacred Heart\u2019s pastor: \u201cOur entire parish family mourns the death of Father Michael, but we also thank God for the gift of his life. &#8230; He will be remembered by many as a peace advocate, a war protester, a community organizer, and a home builder. But in his heart, he was always a parish priest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018The greatest gift\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Doyle, who once said that becoming a pastor in Camden was the \u201cgreatest gift I could ever have been given,\u201d was alert and communicative until Oct. 24, when he suffered a stroke and was placed on hospice care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent days, friends, parishioners, and public officials were making pilgrimages to the block of Jasper Street that was <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/news\/new_jersey\/In-Camden-Michael-Doyle-Lane-honors-a-champion-of-the-city--.html\" target=\"_blank\">renamed Michael Doyle Lane <\/a>in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe had courage and conviction,\u201d said Father Doyle\u2019s niece Geraldine Dobson, who with her sister Rosemarie Cusack flew over from Ireland to see their uncle before he died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe had persistence and perseverance and real guts, as well,\u201d Dobson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the visitors was Sean Dougherty, who made<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.greenroom-productions.com\/poet-of-poverty#:~:text=Hear%20the%20words%20of%20an,city%2C%20Camden%2C%20New%20Jersey.\" target=\"_blank\"> the 2008 documentary <em>Poet of Poverty<\/em><\/a> about Father Doyle. Dougherty also shot and posted <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1w7JIpPzOi0&amp;t=19s\" target=\"_blank\">a video of a prayer service<\/a> outside Father Doyle\u2019s house last Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Doyle and his ministry also were the centerpiece of a documentary by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/life\/michael-doyle-catholic-priest-heart-of-camden-sacred-heart-20201020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filmmaker Douglas Clayton, <em>Heart of Camden<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> released in 2021. Clayton, who lives in Florida, said that he uses the film as a teaching tool in a leadership development program and that students \u201chave been inspired by Father Doyle to do their bit to improve the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Doyle\u2019s visitors sought to hold the hand or whisper in the ear of the priest who had inspired tens of thousands of ordinary people \u2014 and more than a few celebrities \u2014 to help repair and restore Sacred Heart Church, the surrounding neighborhood, and the city itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt some level we knew [his death] was getting closer and closer,\u201d said Dougherty, who lives in West Deptford. \u201cBut it seemed like he would be here forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A lifetime of work in Camden<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Doyle oversaw a complete restoration of Sacred Heart Church and its artworks, which took several decades, and in 1985 established <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartofcamden.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heart of Camden<\/a>, a nonprofit community development corporationthat has renovated and sold 250 homes in what is now called the Waterfront South neighborhood. <strong>\u201c<\/strong>Father Doyle wanted us to not just build houses, but a neighborhood people consider home, with schools, parks, and the arts,\u201d said Carlos Morales, Heart of Camden\u2019s executive director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to continue that,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s how we honor him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Doyle also reinvigorated and sustained the parish\u2019s K-8 school; his elegantly written monthly letters to thousands of donors and supporters worldwide typically netted $1 million annually. He collected and published the letters in a 2002 volume titled <em>It\u2019s a Terrible Day \u2014 Thanks Be to God<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was so happy to see him last week and sit by his side and explain to him that what he did meant so much to me,\u201d said <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/entertainment\/oscar-nominee-colette-facebook-electronic-arts--20210423.html?fbclid=IwAR0l5pai18rhFXtcdAtlorUofRnn6hQk7abYwSsDNRbITYgukEIbpl7FF0Y\" target=\"_blank\">Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Anthony Giacchino<\/a>, who in 2014 began work on a biographical film about Doyle entitled <em>\u2018Bit by Bit<\/em>.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Doyle\u2019s support also was instrumentalin the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southcamdentheatre.org\/?gclid=CjwKCAjw8JKbBhBYEiwAs3sxN4novB66g7LCZPlGRCzwcOIfRI-Ue8CIE-fTETd8zsEhHo-wUlPV0hoCFKwQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Waterfront South Theatre<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nickvirgiliohaiku.org\/house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nick Virgilio Writers House<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/camdenfireworks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Camden FireWorks <\/a>arts center, and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.camdenshipyardmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Camden Shipyard &amp; Maritime Museum<\/strong><\/a>\u2015 all in a neighborhood once targeted for wholesale demolition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A personable priest with a mellifluous brogue, Father Doyle knew how to get things done in a city where political and other obstacles could seem insurmountable. In the 1990s he inspired a campaign to pressure the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccmua.org\/index.php\/green-initiatives\/phoenix-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority <\/a>to install odor control and create parks to mitigate the impact of its regional wastewater treatment plant on the residents of Waterfront South.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMichael used the phrase \u2018throw your hat over the fence\u2019 when speaking of projects to revive Waterfront South,\u201d said Henry Brann, a leader of efforts to build the Writers House in a corner property that had been vacant for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe [said] we had to throw that hat [and] declare that we would build a Writers House. We were incredulous,\u201d said Brann, a longtime Sacred Heart parishioner who lives in Philadelphia. \u201cWe had no means, no resources, it was a moon shot. But Father Doyle\u2019s vision emboldened our group &#8230; [and] the Writers House opened in 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Always about hope\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Joseph Doyle was born Nov. 3, 1934, in the farming hamlet of Rossduff, County Longford, Ireland. His family made a living mostly by selling eggs. Later, Father Doyle often said that while there were no books in the house, there was plenty of conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He studied for the priesthood at St. Peter\u2019s Seminary in County Wexford, where he was ordained May 31, 1959. He was recruited by the Diocese of Camden and arrived in America that September, and taught at Camden Catholic and Holy Spirit high schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Doyle also taught at Villanova University, where he earned a master\u2019s degree in education in 1962. He also served as an assistant pastor at diocesan parishes in Cape May County and in the City of Camden, including St. Joan of Arc in the city\u2019s Fairview section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know that he ever had anything other than the priesthood in his mind,\u201d said Pat Mulligan, who grew up with Father Doyle in Rossduff and remembers him as \u201csomeone with strong convictions, strong Christian beliefs in peace and justice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Doyle was named pastor of Sacred Heart Church in 1974 and often said he wasn\u2019t sure if the appointment was a reward or a punishment. Just a year earlier, he and other members of the \u201cCamden 28,\u201d a group of antiwar activists who in 1971 broke into the federal courthouse in the city to destroy draft board records,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/columnists\/camden-catholic-vietnam-war-draft-protest-reunion-20181211.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> had been acquitted of all charges<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMichael wasn\u2019t sure why he had been sent to Sacred Heart,\u201d Mulligan said. \u201cThe parish at the time was just about as low as it could go. The church had been beautiful, but it was really falling down, and houses in the area were falling down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut because of his inspiration and teaching and ability &#8230; people started coming to the parish from all over metropolitan Philadelphia,\u201d Mulligan said. \u201cHe attracted a lot of people who were looking for something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.operabase.com\/artists\/barbara-dever-1898\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mezzo-soprano Barbara Dever<\/a> said her operatic career, as well as her soul, was nurtured at Sacred Heart and by Father Doyle himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>So many people came to Sacred Heart because the music and the liturgy were inviting to all,\u201d said Dever, who first encountered Father Doyle when he was a religion teacher at Camden Catholic High School and has sung professionally around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMichael was always about hope,\u201d she said. \u201cHe wanted Camden to be a sign of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Doyle never lost his fierce commitment to peace and social justice, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giacchino\u2019s 2007 documentary, <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.pov.org\/camden28\/film-description\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Camden 28<\/em><\/a>, is his favorite among the films he\u2019s made, he said. He uses it while teaching a course at Rutgers-New Brunswick about the arrest and trial of Father Doyle and his fellow protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giacchino talked to Father Doyle about the class while he visited him in Camden late last month. \u201cI told him, \u2018The spirit of the Camden 28 lives on,\u2019 and he squeezed my hand,\u201d Giacchino said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know he heard that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Doyle is survived by a sister, Phyllis O\u2019Reilly, and eight nieces and nephews, all in Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healeyfuneralhomes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Healey Funeral Homes<\/a> in Haddon Heights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Msgr.
